Andrew Dawson

Andrew Dawson originally studied dance in with Merce Cunningham in New York, and then trained in theatre with Desmond Jones, and in Paris, Phillipe Gaulier, Monika Pagneux and Jacques Lecoq. In 1984 he and Gavin Robertson co founded the highly successful theatre company Mime Theatre Project. Their unique style of performance gained an international reputation with the award winning show,’ Thunderbirds FAB’ which toured the world and had 6 season’s in London’s West End.
Andrew then went on to create and direct the stage show of Wallace and Gromit which toured extensively. With the stunning piece, ‘Space Panorama’ the story of the Apollo 11 moon landing told with only hands, and a black clothed table for a stage Andrew has played to diverse audiences, such as an astronaut re union in Houston which included Buzz Aldrin, the largest air show in the world Air Venture in Osh Kosh, and the Hayward Gallery London in front of Michael Lights photographic exhibition ‘Full Moon’. After working with two hands on a table, ‘Quatre Main’ in 1998 developed the idea on to four hands, a piece created and performed with Jos Houben.
In 2003 Andrew directed Wolfgang Hoffman and Sven Till in Fabrik’s multi award winning ‘Pandora 88’ and in 2005 directed a new piece for the Fabrik ,’Do you want to Die With Me’, a work inspired by the letters of Heinrich von Kleist.
Current projects include working with aerialist and actress Matilda Leyser, dancer Sara Crow and ‘The Process of Portrayal’, working with neurologist Jonathan Cole, filmmaker Chris Rawlence of Rosetta Life and Lucia Walker performer and Alexander Teacher. With a grant from the Welcome trust the collaborators are working with people who are either tetraplegic, have M.S. or Motor Neuron Disease with a view to expanding awareness of the experience of movement impairment. Andrew collaborated and directed Trey Lyford and Geoff Sobelle (who created and performed ‘All Wear Bowlers’) in their new production ‘Amnesia Curiosa’ which received its première in Philadelphia in September 06 in the surgical amphitheatre on top of the Philadelphia Hospital. His interest in movement led him to study the Feldenkrais Method and he became a practitioner in 1994. As well as being a cultural ambassador for the 2012 London Olympics, Andrew works as a hand model appearing in numerous commercials.
